Asda will be opening 24 brand new stores this week as part of its expansion into the convenience store market.

The supermarket chain's new sites will be under its Asda Express brand. These stores are smaller and will be located in old Co-op and EG Group forecourt sites. Four stores opened yesterday, a further nine will be opening today, one will open tomorrow and another 10 on Friday (November 10)

The stores, which will be opening in locations such as, Southampton, Somerset, Wakefield, Hereford and Middlesex, will stock up to 3,000 branded and own-label products which Asda says will be 8.9% cheaper than prices at the previous Co-op store.

Last week, Asda announced it had completed the sale of the EG Group’s UK business which would see it turn a further 356 sites into Asda Express stores. This is on top of the 132 Coop forecourts it bought last year. In its announcement, Asda said it would be converting 310 former EG forecourts in England, 24 in Scotland and 22 in Wales.

The EG Group deal will also see Asda grow its presence in the foodservice market, as around 462 Greggs, Burger King and Subway outlets located on the EG Group sites will be transferred over to Asda as part of a franchise agreement. Asda also owns the "natural" fast food chain Leon, which it will also look to introduce to its stores.

Asda also confirmed that it would be taking on staff at the former EG Group and Co-Op sites. Overall, Asda will be opening nearly 500 Asda Express stores in the coming few years. The supermarket chain said it is committed to opening 300 stand-alone sites by the end of 2026.
