A money-saving boiler hack is being shared online and it claims you could potentially save over £70 on your energy bills.
The resurfaced TikTok from personal finance journalist Sophie Smith claims that people across all energy suppliers - including British Gas, Octopus, EDF and OVO as well as many others - could slash their energy bill in just one minute... and it all comes down to your boiler settings.
Sophie, whose TikTok was originally posted last year and has accumulated more than 500,00 views, explains that a lot of the time the boiler flow temperature is set "too high" and to save some money people should turn it down.
In her Tiktok she explained: "Turn your boiler's flow temperature down to 50C heating and 55C water. The setting for most boilers is too high. This simple step could save you money and your home will feel just as warm."
According to the Energy Saving Trust, your boiler's thermostat controls the flow temperature. This is the temperature of the water it sends to the radiators and these are separate from your heating controls.
The water cools down as it flows through the radiators in your home before it returns to the boiler. The temperature of the water at this point is the "return temperature." The Energy Saving Trust says that reducing the flow temperature also lowers the return temperature and "all boilers are more efficient" when the return temperature is low.
Usually, the flow temperature can be set as high as 80C as default and the Energy Saving Trust says you could save money by switching this down to 60C.
Several others commented on Sophie's video sharing their success with the hack. One said: "I have always done this and probably saves a lot more than £70." While another added: "Done this ages ago, save a fortune on gas!"
Although as alway not everyone was on board with the hack, with some complaining about the speed at which their homes heat up on the lower setting. One user said: “My hot water is fine set at 48 but if I turn the central heating down the house doesn't warm up, can take about three hours to reach temp even at 80."
Different types of boilers have different default boiler flow temperatures so you should check what temperature would work best for you. Those with combi-boilers will be able to give this hack a go to find out what works best for them.
However, the Energy Saving Trust warns that those with a conventional boiler with a hot water cylinder should not do this as turning the temperature down can cause Legionnaire's disease - a severe form of pneumonia caused by bacteria called legionella which could grow in the cylinder.
To reduce your boiler's flow temperature, your boiler will have either a dial to control the flow temperature or some buttons and a digital display. You’ll probably need to open a flap on the boiler to access this.
The Energy Saving Trusts recommends - before you make any adjustments - to take a photo or make a note of how everything’s set. That way you’ll know what to turn it back to if you need to.
