A couple who scooped £100,000 through McDonald’s Monopoly have explained what they’ll do with their winnings.

Scarlett and Luke, both 26, from Exeter, couldn’t believe their luck when they realised they’d won the mega prize from the fast food chain - and say they’ll spend the money on a house deposit. The pair won the money through McDonald’s Monopoly, which essentially mimics the classic Monopoly board, with customers able to collect game pieces that represent roads and train stations.

The game pieces are found on qualifying McDonald's products. Once you collect a set, you win a prize - the rarer that set is (so if fewer pieces are made) the better the giveaway will be.

The top prizes for this year were £100,000 in cash, a MINI electric car and a £2,000 TUI holiday. Smaller prizes included £200 for passing GO, headphones, laptops, and free McDonald’s food.

There were five £100,000 prizes up for grabs, and you needed the rare dark blue Mayfair and Park Lane to get your hands on this. Scarlett, who is a food and beverage assistant, and Luke, who is a bus driver, said they were “utterly convinced it wasn’t real” when they discovered they’d won £100,000.

Scarlett said: “We both sat looking at the phone… and as much as we filled in paperwork and got on the phone to both of our parents, not even finishing our meals because we were so excited, we didn't believe it until it was in our account. We’ve never been successful on Monopoly before, not ever more than the peel off food pieces! It was really quite incredible to see it pop up.”

The pair put all their Monopoly pieces into one big pile, so they were unsure which items won them the huge cash prize. Scarlett said: “I put them into the app as we ate, so it could have been anything from chips to a McFlurry to Chicken Selects!”

McDonald’s Monopoly ended on October 17 but you can still redeem your game pieces until October 31. A spokesperson told us there are still thousands of prizes left to be claimed including three £100,000 jackpots.

McDonald's has just launched its new menu, including a new version of its McCrispy. The McCrispy BBQ Smokehouse contains a chicken breast in a crispy coating, smothered in a smoky BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, red onion and lettuce in a sesame-topped burger bun.

There is also the arrival of the Philly Cheese stack burger, which is made up on two beef patties with a cheese sauce, two cheese slices, grilled and crispy onions and pickles served in a toasted bun. Chilli cheese bites have also made a return.

McDonald's has also released some brand new McFlurry flavours too. The M&M's Halloween McFlurry is made of soft dairy ice cream swirled with M&Ms and Halloween sugar shapes and topped with Galaxy Chocolate sauce. There is also the new Twix Toffee Apple McFlurry which is swirled with Twix biscuit and chocolate pieces and topped with a toffee apple sauce.
