A dog behaviour specialist has revealed the two key mistakes dog owners make. Passionate canine trainer Will Atherton, who believes "leadership is love", has raked in over 22.4million views on his TikTok videos after revealing some truths about owning a dog.
Will has previously confessed he would not own certain dog breads and offers tips on each bread. The specialist, who now has over 886,00 followers on the social media platform, says there a reasons why people struggle to train their dogs.
Will revealed that a common act by pet owners - letting food sit in a bowl for their dog all day long - is a key mistake. The dog training expert said getting specific meal times will implement a positive association between food and feeding time with their owners. His clip rakes in over 617,000 views and thousands of comments.
Speaking to his legion of followers, Will explained: "These are the worst things that you accidentally do with your dog accidentally every single day. As a canine behaviourist, I specialise in things [that] go terribly wrong with dogs, which also means I see the reasons why those bad things happened.
"Not only are you missing out on a massive opportunity to help train your dog, but you're also missing out on a massive opportunity to build a relationship with your dog, where all the best things in life come through you."
He continued: "Stop leaving food down for your dog to have access to whenever they want." Will said the best approach is to place the food out at specific times so your pooch can get into a routine.
Another key issue which many pet owners are guilty of, Will says, is owners who make a point to their dogs that they are leaving and returning from home. Will explained: "When you leave and when you return, and leave you to return, stop getting your dog so hyped up, [by] telling them that everything is going to be OK. Stop telling them how much you miss them when you come home, you're creating separation anxiety."
One commentator said: "Yes, I'm guilty of that… it’s my own separation anxiety... Thank you! Will work on this."
