Shops and supermarkets have already started announcing if they'll be closing on Boxing Day this year.
Christmas has become renowned for being one of the year's biggest shopping days - but some businesses have confirmed they'll remain shut on both December 25 and 26, so staff can enjoy a well-earned rest with their families. In previous years, this has been received from customers and more retailers and supermarkets are deciding to follow.
The Mirror has rounded up a list of all retailers and supermarkets which are planning on keeping their stores closed on Boxing Day this, at the time of writing. We will continue to update this article if any further announcements are made.
Aldi
The supermarket chain will once again be shutting the doors on its 1,000 stores on Boxing Day this year. The move was confirmed through a statement from Aldi communications director Richard Thorton earlier this month. In his statement, he said Aldi recognised that Christmas was an "important time" for many of its staff and keeping their stores closed on Boxing Day allowed them to spend more time with family.
He added: "Customers will have plenty to look forward to in the run-up to Christmas, with more of Aldi’s brand-new Christmas ranges arriving in stores over the next few weeks.”
This is not the first time Aldi has decided to remain closed on the bank holiday after Christmas. The discount supermarket chain is known for remaining closed for both Christmas bank days over the festive period - rather than just on Christmas Day - so the announcement this year really wasn't a surprise. It will also be closing its doors for New Year's Day this year too.
The supermarket chain has also published its opening hours over Christmas on its website so shoppers can make plans for Christmas ahead of the festive season. Stores will be opening from 9:30am until 4pm on both Christmas and New Year's Eve. You can find the full details of opening hours from Monday, December 18 until New Year's Day on Aldi's website here.
Lidl
Like Aldi, Lidl will be closing its doors for both Christmas Day and Boxing Day this year - although a few stores potentially will remain open however Lidl has not confirmed which stores these could be. The discount supermarket chain will also be shutting its stores on New Year's Day as well to give their staff a break over the festive period. Like other supermarkets, opening times will vary across stores so shoppers should always double check before heading down to their local. Customers can check opening times on Lidl's online store finder or on their Lidl rewards app.
Home Bargains
The popular bargains chain announced back in September that it was closing all of its UK stores on Boxing Day and New Year's Day this festive season. In a post shared on X (Twitter), Home Bargains said: "CHRISTMAS ANNOUNCEMENT - All of our stores will be closing for Boxing Day & New Years Day. We would like to thank all our staff for how hard you have worked this past year, and want you to relax and enjoy the Christmas break with your loved ones. Love from team HB"
The company also later confirmed that all Home Bargains stores will close at the earlier time of 5pm on Christmas Eve. In a statement released by the company, it said it "was only right to support our valued store teams by giving them extended time off around Christmas and New Year".
Poundland
Poundland is another high street chain shutting shops for longer over the festive period. Last month Poundland announced it would be closing Christmas Day as normal but stores will remain closed on Boxing Day and on New Year's Day too. This is the fourth consecutive year staff across its 800 branches would be given extra time off.
On the move, Simon Wells, people director at Poundland said: "We really appreciate how hard our colleagues work during the year and closing the stores on these additional days over Christmas and New Year is our way of saying thank you to them – not least because this quarter has been especially busy with new store openings. Their efforts are appreciated and we hope they enjoy a well-earned break with family and friends over the festive period.”
Iceland
Iceland and its Food Warehouse stores will also be closing their doors on Boxing Day - on top of Christmas Day - this year. The supermarket chain confirmed that all of its 1,000 Iceland and Food Warehouse stores would be affected. The frozen food retailer also shut its doors last year noting that the move was to allow their hard-working staff more time off to spend with family and friends.
Waitrose and John Lewis
Waitrose and John Lewis stores will be closing for two days over the festive period. The upmarket supermarket chain and its sister brand will be closing all stores on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day this year. Store will open once again on December 27 however opening times will be different to normal so you should check before heading down.
Most Waitrose and John Lewis stores will also be closed on New Year's Day, only a small number will remain open including the branch in Manchester's Trafford Centre. The group say some of our shops will also be open for Deliveroo or Uber Eats orders on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Again, you should check on the chain's branch finder tool for the most up to date information on opening times over the festive period.
Marks & Spencer
M&S is another high street favourite to be closing its doors on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day this year. Just like other stores, opening hours across the festive season will vary so shoppers should always check opening times for their local store before heading down. M&S will be opening stores on Christmas Eve but only until 4pm - although stores will be open until 10pm on December 23.
