Google is back with two sharp-shooting new smartphones. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro both get some cracking camera upgrades which not only let you snap better images but also offer full editing without the need for a degree in Photoshop. Thanks to a feature called Magic Editor, you can cut people out and move them around, make unwanted objects disappear and tweak unique parts of the image via simple taps on the screen.
Clever AI does all the heavy lifting for you with complete photo transformations taking seconds. Google has also added something called "Best Take" which works when taking group shots to pick the best facial expressions so it looks like everyone is smiling with their eyes wide open at the same time.
There's also the introduction of Pro Controls which finally allows you to dig deep into the settings and make the Pixel 8 Pro feel more like a DSLR camera. Switch to this professional option and you can adjust exposure and focus manually rather than the phone taking control.
It's not just still images that get a boost with Google also improving videos thanks to Night Sight. This makes movies shot when the sun goes down appear brighter without the need for a truck full of lighting gear. This on-device video upgrade is even possible when shooting in 4K which is pretty impressive considering the power needed to create the effect of brighter conditions.
Google says it's all been made possible thanks to its Tensor G3 processor which is now much faster than anything that's come before it.
They are both covered in Gorilla Glass to keep them looking box fresh and speedy 120Hz displays offer a silky smooth experience when whizzing through websites. If you buy the Pixel 8 you'll get a 6.2-inch panel, whilst Pro users are offered a 6.7-inch screen. Both are brighter than before for more immersive visuals.
Other extras include fast charging (0 to 50% in 30 minutes), wireless refilling and even a temperature sensor which Google reckons can even show how hot your body is.
Those who love keeping hold of their phones will also be pleased to hear that Google is promising software updates for 7 years so things should stay fresh for the life of the device.
Sadly, all of these upgrades come at a price with both devices costing more than last year's Pixel 7 range.
The Pixel 8 starts from £699 with the Pixel 8 Pro costing £999 - both are out this month.
