GeoGuessr is simply a concept. This geographical guessing game drops players in random areas of the globe - it's then up to them to quickly discover where they are and drop a location on a map. Using Google Street View technology, gamers have to hunt around for clues - such as street signs, landmarks or flags - before a countdown timer hits zero. The closer your guess is to the actual location the more points scored.
GeoGuesser was originally launched all the way back in 2013 by designer Anton Wallén but quickly went viral during the pandemic when people dreamed of being able to travel again.
Over the past few years, it's amassed a huge user base of over 40 million people and it's not hard to see why as travelling the planet and using your best detective skills is incredibly addictive.
So how do you play and how much does it cost?
If you fancy giving it a try, you can play GeoGuessr on the web or via the Android and iPhone apps. It's free to try although you only get limited games before you'll have to wait for more plays to become unlocked. There are numerous options including single and multiplayer games along with a winner-take-all all Battle Royale mode. For unlimited gameplay, you can pay for the Pro Elite version which costs £3.20 per month.
If you get really good at it you can consider taking part in the GeoGuessr World Cup. Yes, this event has just taken place in Stockholm and was won by a Dutch team who pipped France in the grand finals.
Along with offering some time-wasting fun GeoGuessr has been cited as an educational tool. That's because it can help users to develop critical skills to analyse geographical and cultural landscapes.
It's even been suggested that schools could use it to help children learn more about key areas and cities across the planet.
