She seems to stretch the truth about her residence in the district and her funding sources. But aside from that, this interview is revealing. Questioned about accountability tied to salary, she replied, “It kind of pigeonholes us into like certain priorities that are predetermined, that then incentivize kind of short-term thinking, as well as not long-term, sustainable solution.”

For me it translates into, “We don’t want to make a plan, stick to it and get something done. We’d rather have committees, commissions and paid consultants study the situation ad nauseum, and then decide that the plan is too expensive, so let’s start all over again.”

In the meantime, more than fifty percent of all the services for homeless people are in District 3. They create a ton of trash but the streets in District 3 are not swept. The homeless encampments are not only still with us, but growing thanks to the Mayor’s plan to sweep the Guadalupe south of Julian (where did he think those folks would go?!). Lots of people with issues on the street, and little consistent attention from the police, even though the station is only blocks away from downtown neighborhoods. Now we’re going to have downtown electronic billboards thanks to an interim City Council rep who put his hands on his ears and sang la-la-la when faced with constituent resistance.

Even the mail delivery is relentlessly and one might say criminally unreliable. (I know that’s federal, but some years ago Liccardo took it on with some short lived success, because he understood that you can’t have a vibrant downtown if you have lousy customer service and lots of inconvenience so nobody wants to live there).

I don’t want ‘agility.’ I want someone who will fiercely protect this district and stand up to other districts that want it to be a dumping ground, someone whose office will answer email and phones and deal quickly and decisively with the problems that face the people who actually live here, as opposed to the priorities of Big Labor and other folks with Big Money, and Big Lobbyists.

I attended a meet and greet where Anthony was answering questions and I left very impressed with his listening skills and comments. He understands the frustration many people have regarding the unhoused problem that impacts us all. He strikes me as someone that can work with others and cares about our city. I am hoping that he reaches out to the county and helps our Mayor. Our city and district 3 cannot work alone but needs the funding the county and state receive and perhaps solutions can be found and the county can finally make sure other cities work with San Jose to share solutions and create safe sites not only in San Jose but elsewhere.

First, I am disappointed that both candidates will not be supporting the Mayor’s “Responsibility To Shelter”. They and others use the word arrest and I prefer to think of it as INTERVENTION. What do they say to the mother and son who were assaulted while at a bakery by a mentally ill street person and the next day they saw him on the street probably going to do the same thing to someone else. Many businesses and residents are tired of the unhoused living in neighborhood streets leaving trash, human waste and on drugs acting crazy. Our streets are full of RV’s, vehicles that is costing the city millions because of the junk and trash they leave on the street and the city has to pay for this cleanup. Chavez advised she wants a joint homeless coordination office but that is going to cost more money and take a couple of years to get running. People want relief now. Regarding Pay Raises for City Officials on perceived performance I think this will not work. Who is going to do the judging and I can see it as a tool to place city interest before district needs with again Districts like 5,7 and parts of District 3 will get dumped on. This is just poking the bear politics that will cause more division among CM’s and departments. There are too many factors that can make departments not work as they should be and one of them is funding, staff and direction from the council and city manager.

Focus on labor. No focus on constituents. This is what political experts call the friendly face of facism. And the street theatre from the pilgrims asking the questions…. It doesn’t get any more infant.
