Home Secretary James Cleverly says he will consider calls to change the law to make fireworks quieter.
The top Tory was told that loud bangs from rockets that are illegally set off are causing misery for people and their pets. He was urged to bring in new rules ensuring manufacturers turn down the volume on the explosions.
Labour MP Judith Cummins called for the legal limit for commercial fireworks to be brought down to 90 decibels or lower - down from the current 120dB. Animal charity the RSPCA has also called for the change, as well as limits on the times of year they can be sold or let off.
There have previously been calls to change the upper limit, with Labour MP Sarah Owen last year tabling the Misuse of Fireworks Bill. Ms Cummins told the Commons: "In my constituency of Bradford South, the anti-social and illegal use of fireworks continues to affect law-abiding citizens and our pets. So will the minister commit to reducing the legal decibel limit of commercial fireworks from 120 to 90 decibels or less?"
Mr Cleverly, who has been Home Secretary for two weeks after Suella Braverman's sacking, replied: "It's not an issue I've yet had the opportunity to read in to, it's not the angle I was expecting for this question. It seems a thoughtful proposal, I will give it due consideration, but I can't make a commitment at this point."
The RSPCA said thousands of people have backed its Bang Out of Order campaign, with pet owners voicing their alarm over the impact on animals. Carrie Stones, campaign manager at the RSPCA, said last month: “Fireworks are impacting animals each and every year – both during firework season when marked to celebrate traditional events and – more unexpectedly – out of season for other occasions.
"While many people enjoy watching displays, for many animals the dazzling spectacle of fireworks often becomes a terrifying ordeal. Sadly we are inundated with calls each year about welfare concerns for animals connected to fireworks and we hear first hand how frustrated the public are that the Bonfire Night period seems to last longer than ever before.”
