There has been a marked change in the way First Lady Jill Biden decorates the White House for Christmas compared to her predecessor Melania Trump.

Gone are the stark reds and whites of the Trump era, discarded in favour of decorations with a warmer and more traditional feel to them.

However, this year, fans have noticed there was also another change in the Bidens' decor, which were inspired by a child's wonder of the holidays – they were missing one crucial part from previous years – the stockings by the fireplace. There are also nods to military members and the Biden family pets within the decor.

For the past two years Joe and Jill Biden hung six stockings on the fireplace mantel in the State Dining Room – one for each of their grandchildren. A spokesperson for the White House saidl: "The family will be spending Christmas at Camp David and their family stockings will be there."

The First Lady revealed the 2023 White House Christmas decorations on social media on Monday, writing on X (formerly Twitter): "For this year’s holidays at the White House, our theme is inspired by how children experience this festive season: completely present in the beauty and bounty around them, their senses alight, with hearts open to the 'Magic, Wonder, and Joy' of the season.

"We have Santa’s magical sleigh suspended in the air in the Grand Foyer, a working train running around the Official White House Christmas Tree, and a Gingerbread White House that celebrates the 200th Anniversary of a childhood favourite, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas!"

And the theme is far away from what Melania Trump used to roll out. Many people were quick to compare this year's decor to the bright red row of trees that former First Lady Trump displayed during her time in the White House, with one person quipping on the social media site: "That woman's stupendous gift for Evil Christmas aesthetics was the one good thing Trump brought to the White House."

Another said: "I liked the blood red trees. The only thing the Trump administration got right," while a third said: "Never before had a Christmas display evoked such open hostility and unequivocal malicious intent. Pure darkness. That's art."

And there was general applause for Jill Biden's efforts: "What a delight compared to the Christmas trees that looked like they were dipped in blood," someone wrote, while another said: "A huge improvement from those dystopian blood red trees we saw in the last administration," and another wrote: "So perfectly American Christmas. Thank you for bringing back Christmas joy to the White House."

But there was no mention of any of the Biden grandchildren. Instead there are tributes to White House pets: Willow and Commander, the German Shepherd sent packing from the presidential abode after biting Secret Service agents. Along with candy, toy soldiers, ballerinas, and tributes to military families.

The White House is expected to receive thousands of visitors this holiday season, Biden continued in her series of tweets. This year's official White House Christmas Tree stands 18-and-a-half feet tall and is from Fleetwood, North Carolina.
