As millions of Netflix users recently found out, they are no longer able to share passwords with friends and family. The crackdown, which began earlier this year, is aimed at stopping people from bingeing on boxsets and movies without paying for access. Ever since Netflix launched it always allowed homes to swap account details but with so many people now watching for free the streaming giant clearly felt it was time to put a stop to it.
The original ban came into force in the summer and now it seems more users are being affected by the sharing ban with some Sky customers starting to see a warning message pop up own their TVs.
It's unclear why Sky users have been exempt from the block until now but it could have something do with the way they pay.
Netflix is now bundled into many Sky accounts which means users simply pay one bill for full access to premium telly channels and the streaming platform.
It might have taken Netflix a little while to catch up but this latest message clearly shows time is up.
Sky's help team has even posted a message on X (formally Twitter ) warning users that might see a pop-up alert which says "Confirm this TV is in your Netflix household."
In its update, Sky added: “We've seen that some customers are seeing messaging about Netflix Households for the first time.”
If you have Sky with Netflix you can head to the help page for more advice on what to do if you’ve been sharing Netflix accounts.
Here's what Sky says about Netflix password sharing
"Netflix are introducing some changes to stop account holders sharing their account with people outside of their household. A Netflix account is meant to be shared by people living together in one household.
"You’ll only be able to share your Netflix account in one household (location/address).
"To share your Netflix account with people outside of your household, you’ll need to add them as extra members for an extra monthly charge. Extra Members isn’t available through Sky. For more information, go to Netflix.com/sharing.
"You’ll still be able to watch on laptops, mobiles or tablets outside your household, as long as you’ve used the device within your Netflix household in the last 30 days."
