Tesco is trialling new technology that lets customers do their shop without scanning any items.

Customers at the Fulham Reach Tesco Express GetGo store can now take items from shelves and “just walk up” to the checkout which will "magically present them with a list of the products they have picked up". Shoppers can then check the list and "pay in the usual way", reports The Grocer.

The process is similar to using the GetGo checkout-free feature of Tesco’s app. However, with this method, shoppers do not need to have the supermarket's GetGo App. Alongside this, shoppers can print out a receipt immediately rather than waiting for the digital receipt to be sent through.

Tesco's GetGo stores are "checkout-free" - which means customers can simply pick up any items they want to buy and walk out. It works by monitoring shoppers’ movements and product picked through ceiling cameras and on-shelf weight sensors. You can scan your Tesco app on entry, get shopping and let the app settle your payment and receipts. However, the stores do still have self service checkouts for customers to use if they prefer.

This is the first time this technology has been introduced into a public store. Before the launch, Tesco trialled the service at its Welwyn Garden City headquarters. Sarah Quiggin, Tesco head of store customer experience said the supermarket chain was "constantly searching" for new ways to make shopping trips "as seamless and convenient as possible".

She added: “This trial of scan-free checkouts will add another option for customers in Fulham Reach to save time on scanning items and will reduce queuing in store. We will be watching closely to see how customers react to this potential new option of having a list of their shopping presented to them automatically."

The technology Tesco is using within its stores has been developed by the company Trigo and the new checkout service is also provided by them. There are currently four Tesco GetGo stores in the UK. There are three in London which include, the Chiswell Street branch, High Holborn, and Fulham Reach. There is also one branch at Aston University in Birmingham.

Tesco has not said whether it will be introducing the service throughout all of its GetGo stores.
